Casting Planning

Casting Planning:
(Made on powerpoint)
Here is a list of our cast choice:

Eman as Main Boxer: Eman offered to play the protagnist as she felt she would be able to play that character better than any of us.Also she has a little sister who could play her younger self.

Yumni as the younger boxer self: Yumni is Eman's younger sister which meant they look alike, this makes the younger/present self look more realistic.

Boxer 2 (me): I offered to play this part, because I felt I could live up to that little character.

Boxer Mother: We needed someone who was strong in acting, so we asked our friend Keyona to play the mother.

Coach: We asked one of our classmates Jacob to play the coach , we didn't need a strong actor since its only a little part in the film.

Referee: Ramsha decided to play the referee since its also a small part.

Mood board of clothing ideas

MADE ON PIC COLLAGE

This is a mood board of photos that have inspired us for the characters clothing. This will help us pick out what each characters outfit will be.This task was to help our group see visual ideas of what our clothing could potentially look like.

Costume Mindmap

Mother: She would wear ripped, dirty clothing. She would have smudged makeup and messy hair, this would suggest her lack effort to be a good role model for her daughter(Joud).

Joud: Joud would wear sporty clothing, with wrapped bandages on her hand and over it the boxing gloves. This would indicate that she is a boxer. While her younger self would wear childish like clothing like a dress and hairband.

Coach: Would wear a white polo shirt and black trousers, to make him look more like a coach.

Army men: They would have their formal clothing on with badges.

Props minmap

Props planning

A collection of props ideas.

Joud younger self:

-Red Ribbon: Even after her mother abusing her,  Joud still tries to find beauty in the little things in life. However the ribbon being red would indicate that Joud is surrounded by danger.

-Boxing book: This shows that Joud is interested in boxing.

Boxer older self:

-Boxing gloves/tape/hoodie: This clearly shows that Joud is a boxer.

Mother:
-Cigarette & Alcohol : This would show that the mother is addicted and a reckless mess.

-Wedding portrait: Shows that the mother still loves and misses her husband who died in war.

-Grey hairspray: This will suggests that the mother is in a old age.

TV/Phone: This suggest that the mother doesn't care about her daughter, but only herself since she tries to find something to entertain her.

Coach :

-The coach will have props like clipboard and whistle to show his character in the film.

-Flower: To show his support for the boxer Joud.

Most props are available or cheap to buy, so we will split the bill amongst the group.

Visiting Film locations

Visiting Film locations

This is a collection of photos we took at Qgym, on the day we went to check it out.We tested out a few shots by taking photos and short videos to see how compositions would look like.We gathered and developed many ideas for our film. This collage was created on an app called pic collage.

We needed a gym with a boxing ring, so we could film the main character getting ready for the match.
These are photos of the house we will be filming the main characters childhood flashbacks at, we needed a house that didn't seem so high class. This would show more of the characters background.

Location research & Info on Boxing gyms

Location research & Info on Boxing gyms

We made some research on gyms that included a boxing ring:

Gym: Strongbox
Location: Abu Hamour
Although they don't have a ring they can provide us with all boxing equipment and coaches.

Gym: Q gym
Location: Near DC
-A man named Karim said they have a boxing ring
-Karim asked for contact from Dc to promote his business(Self defense etc.)

We will visit Qgym, and create test shots to see if its the best choice, if not we will widen our research.

Location Planning

Location Planning
Ideas on where we can film:

Gym : We need to find a gym that has a boxing ring so we can film the boxer going into the ring. A boxing ring will clearly show the audience that she is a boxer .

House: To film the boxers flashback on her childhood, this will give more of a home atmosphere feeling.

Film title logo ideas

Film Tilte Logo Ideas

Ramsha kindly volunteered to create our film title logo. We discussed as a group what we want our logo to look like. We want it to be simple but bold.Three logos were created and we will pick one that suits our film the most.

Film title idea 1 :

Here is a video to show how our logo would appear on screen. We were discussing if the font colour should be changed to red .

Film title idea 2 :

This is our second logo which is bold but has a fading effect at the corners of the text. The bright bold red text is set on a black background.

This logo has a cloudy background with a white font on top.I like this logo more since it fits the film, but the clouds in the background is distracting.

After we finish the film we will try out 3 of the titles and see which is suitable.

Film title analysis

Film title analysis

Doctor Strange :This film title is a outline of the letters. The colours font is a yellowish/gold colour set on a dark background.I find this font very interesting but also mind playing.

Total Recall:This film title is bold and has a 3D structure. It has a metallic look with a strong shine. However it is a typical film title look.

The Maze Runner: Unlike the Total Recalls shinny metallic look, The Maze Runners title has a rusty metallic look.It is also a 3D structure set on a dark background.

Ant-Man: This film title stands out because of its bold defined title with a bright red.The red alerts the audience catching their attention much easier than all the other film tile with metallic or rusty looks.Although it does not have a 3d structure and its flat, the tile is much larger than all other title I have seen.

I think we will look into "The Maze Runner" and "Ant-Man" film tiles, since its much more eye catching.

Film Title Planning

Here are a few ideas we brain stormed for the film title.Every person in the group came up with a idea.

Exnihilo: The phrase means "making something from nothing", which would mean the boxer started her journey from scratch. We decided not to go with this title since its a latin phrase that people aren't familiar with.

Mind Over Matter: This means keeping level headed and powering through rough situations, and thats what the protagonist would have done to get past her horrible childhood.Since this is a common phrase we sill not use it as our film title.

Battle To Redemption: This would mean that the boxer redeems herself, and saves herself from her unfortunate childhood. This title still didn't seem fit for the film.

Broken: Although this title made sense, that the boxer is still picking up the pieces of her broken childhood; we felt the the title was too basic.

So we picked "Black Heaven" because it will represent the boxers cruel childhood and her pain, however she is still trying to overcome this pain while her passion grows for boxing.

Analysis of questionnaire

Analysis of questionnaire

This questionnaire was successful because we got 100 responses. Most of the responses came from female teens and adults, this will make it easier because they are our target group.

Here 63% of the votes is for a storyline then the characters. To capture the audiences attention they want an interesting storyline with strong actors.

Here it is preferred that there is more actions and movement rather that dialogue or narration. We will take in mind to add some dialogue but our main focus will be on movements and action.

I was surprised to see that female protagonist was voted for the most. Our aim from the beginning was for the lead role to be a female!

Most audience would prefer the film to be all fast pace, however I think if the film had a built up pace then it would create better tension.
I agree that the credits shouldn't distract the audience from the action in the film. The credits should be small, near the corner of the screen and not as a bright distractive colour.

Film openings aim is to introduce the film and characters.

46% of the response voted for the ending of the film to be a lingering thought. However I prefer it to be a cliff hanger since it will be more interesting for the audience.

The audience prefer rock music over every other given choice. But the music genre choice could change over time, depending on the development of the films storyline.

I agree that for female lead roles it doesn't always have to be about beauty.Women shouldn't be seen just through their beauty, but rather confidence and intelligence.

Film opening Focus group

Film opening Focus group

We asked few people questions that will help us make our film opening more successful. The focus group helped us to see peoples reaction easily and their opinion. So check it out and enjoy!

The focus group looked at a "Mission impossible Rogue"  and "Creed" film and gave us their opinion!
       ( MADE ON FINAL CUT)

Eman: Director, editor, interviewer, camerawoman
Nour: Camerawoman, editor, microphone handler
Ramsha: Editor, camerawoman, microphone handler
SashaEditor, camerawoman, microphone handler

Evaluation on focus group:

In the focus group there was a total of six people, three boys and girls who gave us their feedback.Half of the group reacted to "Mission Impossible Rogue", while the other half reacted to "Creed".

Most of the focus group agreed that the main role has mostly been played by male characters, while the female was a princess in need of saving. They were interested in seeing a female playing the main role, while others said they preferred the stereotypical male protagonist.

Most of the focus group were interested in seeing a female as the protagonist. As a group of girls we felt that this would be something unique and interesting. However there has been a rise in females playing the lead roles in recent films, we still felt that it would break the casual stereotypes of male lead roles in action films.

They all said that fast pace musics in the film makes it more obvious that its an action film, and it builds up the tension. But they weren't really that bothered about the music, but rather the action visuals appearing.

Everyone agreed that they didn't pay attention to the credits, they preferred the credits to be at the corner of the film or at the very end.

Most prefer a cliff hanger since it grabs the viewers attention quicker. than seeing a black out then a title.

This focus group helped us see the expectation we need to reach for the audience.I was glad to see that most of the group wanted to see a female protagonist, since it was what we wanted to have in our film opening as a group.

Editing analysis

Editing analysis of Memento

When writing my textual analysis for the Memento film, I found the editing used very interesting and I would like to look into it further.

Leonard Shelby, a former insurance investigator, who suffers from anterograde amnesia.Short term memory loss in which he cannot make new memories. The film is fragmented just like Leonardo's mind, to show this the film is told backwards with scenes jumping back in fifteen minutes in the story line. The reverse order for the film is cut by a chronological sequence, so every few minutes the film is cut.The films turns in a circle, so the end of the film meets the beginning.
In order for the film to maintain comprehensive relation editing was used :  Two scenes are connected in reverse order plot, by repeating the first few seconds of a scene in conclusion of a scene that appears later.

Continuity editing a dominat style used in the film industry is also used for memento.

Continuity editing: is the process, in film and video creation, of combining more-or-less related shots, or different components cut from a single shot, into a sequence so as to direct the viewer's attention to a pre-existing consistency of story across both time and physical location.

Narrative analysis on film

Narrative analysis on film

Narrativea spoken or written account of connected events; a story.

Narration: the act or process of telling a story or describing what happens.

Todorov produced a theory in 1969 which he believed could be applied to any film. He believed that all films followed the same narrative. This is found in many different media forms : e.g films and video games.

Also he believed that the primary function of a narrative was to solve a problem, the characters should pass through a series of stages of a linear narrative where events follow a chronological order.

1.A state of equilibrium: Everything in the film is normal.

In the movie taken a father drops off his 18 year old daughter with her friend in the Los Angles airport, the two girls are excited for their holiday in Paris.

2.A disruption of the equilibrium by some action: normaility gets destroyed

The two girls arrive in Paris, and accept an offer to ride with a strange man to their apartment. In this scene a shot of the man talking on the phone is shown. The man talks about the two young girls and where they are staying , this shows the normality getting destroyed. As the man may be causing danger to the girls.

3.Recongnition of the problem:Character recognise the problem

While one of the girls is on the phone with her father, she sees her friend getting kidnapped and tells her father.

4.Attempt to repair the problem: The characters try to fix the problem, sometimes the plan to repair goes wrong.

The father is a former CIA operative, he sets off to Paris to find his kidnapped daughter.

5.A return or restoration of a new equilibrium : everything goes back to normal or a new equilibrium is created .

The father eventually finds his daughter and returns her home.

Soundtrack analysis

MADE ON POWERPOINT

Analysis of opening titles

Mission: impossible Rogue Nation Title sequence

In this film opening it begins with a scene of Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) climbing onto a plane from the outside, it contains establishng shots and match-on-action shots. Then we see the film credits played using fast cuts(continuity editing), this makes the cuts between shots smoother. The music is a original theme song that creates a detective /spy on action feeling. This music plays along well with the credits because it is as quick as the credits. The film credits are of a bright yellow colour with sharp defined shapes set on a dark background that includes an zoom in on the enlarged bright words.Between each credit there is a shot shown that is later on seen in the film, these shots including the credits are quick. This creates a sence of quickness, which garbs the attention of the audience. The audience will be keen to see more since so little is shown so quick. In our film we may look into music that is quick pace to match the action genre.

Camera shot conventions

Camera shot conventions

Here are the same camera conventions used in all 3 films :

Southpaw
Saving Private Ryan
Memento

Conventions:

Continuity editing is used in all three film openings, it is a dominant style in the film industry.Where  cuts are made invisible so the film would be smooth, and to maintain continues and clear narrative action by following a set of rules.
